when your home schooling child is doing book work what do you do with your noisy 2 year old?

I was just asked this via email 2 days ago! It’s probably the most common problem in the book…and my best advice is to never make the noisy toddler feel like an interruption. Not only for his sake, but for his older brother’s sake. How we deal with these precious gifts is a huge eye-opener to our children, and we really want them to understand that the baby is important too!
My 3 yo used to watch too many movies (all approved by me, of course, but too many). It was a crutch, I admit, one that allowed us girls to get a lot of schoolwork done without interruptions. Amazingly, when we “unplugged” for good, she became quite happy puttering around with her dollies and puzzles, etc. Maybe you could have a special box of toys/learning fun to bring out only during those workbook times? Give him something to look forward to, to use during his own “quiet time”?
Movies, special toys, giving them a coloring book or other workbook to work on while the older sibling works in the book. Even if they are just scribbling, they feel like they are like their older sibling.
I don’t have anything up my sleeve that hasn’t already been said. I really like how Mary mentioned not having the younger one feel (or the older one, too) feel like an interruption.
food. sitting on mum’s knee. playdough. food. sitting on mum’s knee. sand. books. food. sitting on mum’s knee.
repeat.
sometimes i just used to do lots of play/fun stuff/outings in the mornings and pop in something a little more like *serious school* once the baby/toddler was having a wee nap.
now we just play all day lol X
I was going to say what has already been said, having a box of toys that is only brought out during that time so it is special to him and intriguing.
When I was homeschooling there were tons of workbooks for preschoolers — simple things like coloring or putting stickers in places in a book. Maybe something like that would help the little one feel like he was “doing school” like big brother.
And I wouldn’t be above having that as a time for him to watch DVDs, either.

Lol, I better leave that one to someone whose homeschooled child actually does book work. I guess you try to distract, but it’s not easy !
